MY TRAVEL TIPS | THREE THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN TRAVELING ON A BUDGET

Travel Trip Map Direction Exploration Planning Concept

FIGURE OUT YOUR PRIORITIES

Realize that travel doesn’t have to be as expensive as you might think, however you will need to budget and you will need to compromise. Setting expectations and priorities will help you determine how much you’ll need to budget. If you’re not willing to compromise and want nothing but the best, be prepared to pay top dollar.

Some priorities to consider:

  • Experiencing the culture
  • Exploring the food
  • Living like a local
TRAVEL IN THE OFF-SEASONS

If you have a flexible schedule this will be the easiest way to save money, and as an added plus you won’t have to deal with the masses of tourists. I have found that traveling mid-September to October is the most affordable for European travel, and depending on your destination the weather will still be optimal. Avoid traveling in summer and during the holidays.

FIND ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATIONS

Hotels are usually the first places people look at for accommodation when traveling, they are typically also the most expensive. If you’re a solo traveler consider looking at hostels, you’ll save money and even get to meet fellow travelers. If you’re traveling with friends or a family consider using a site like Airbnb. You’ll have the option of choosing to rent a room in someone’s home or opt to have the whole place to yourself. I love Airbnb, it’s the perfect way to experience the local culture while living like a local.

If you’re lucky to know people at your destination see if you can stay with them. This will save you tons of money and as long as you’re not an obnoxious house guest you’ll pretty much be able to get away with helping out with food (if you’re eating theirs) and cleaning up after yourself as payment.
